The first Celtic monks came to Heversham perhaps 1400 years ago. The core of the gospel that they preached was the same as that which is preached in Christian churches across the world today. A building has stood on this site for over 1000 years, during which so much has changed. Looking at St Peter’s today, it is possible to see how it has changed as patterns of worship and witness have evolved in order to retain relevance, and that process is set to continue – a living faith in a living building.
If you want to find out more about the history of St Peter’s, you will find it in Roger Bingham’s book, The Church at Heversham: A History of Westmorland's Oldest Recorded Church.
